My studies focus on the language education in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). My experiences of teaching Japanese on the islands of Yap and Pohnpei in the FSM made me think about the role of English education in relation to local language education. What is English education like that respects the local language and local culture? What are the thoughts of local English teachers and their practices? I am going to identify teaching materials and methods appropriate to local needs and learners’ background culture, based on local people’s voices and their practices.
